Why Due Diligence and Background Checks are a Must for Employers
Last week, 12 innocent people were tragically murdered in the Navy Shipyard Shooting. The shooter, Aaron Alexis, had been arrested multiple times in the past, but his company did not find enough red flags to deny him his security clearance. Cases like this remind us of the need for proper and thorough due diligence of employees and potential hires. Here at AIS, one of our most requested services is due diligence and background checks. Numerous Fortune 500 companies have retained our services in their efforts to hire Ivy League MBA students. On behalf of these corporations, our Research Analyst and Senior Investigator, Mary Montuori, has conducted extensive in-person interviews with students at the Harvard Business School for companies located in Boston and New York City, in which the company will provide us with questions to ask their subjects. These interviews are very helpful in assessing the personality traits, strengths and weaknesses, and character of possible future employees. Some subjects become noticeably irritated by certain questions about their past (such as whether or not they have used illegal drugs, associates from their past, etc), while others don’t mind the prodding. This shines a light on their potential past transgression (as well as other reasons they may not be fit for hire) and it may reveal which candidates are honest, narcissistic, or defiant. It can be thought of as a gentler form of interrogation, and it takes an investigator that is gifted with this art form to render opinions to the Fortune 500 companies seeking a character evaluation of a potential employee.
I was recently interviewed by Shira Springer of The Boston Globe for her article about the way the Patriots handled Aaron Hernandez and whether or not they should have done more background on him. A gifted athlete like Hernandez is a multi-million dollar investment for a team, and proper due diligence is truly necessary. Similarly, a future employee of a Fortune 500 company will be dealing with multi-million dollar business deals, and employers need to ensure that their hires are going to the right candidates. Both Aarons – Alexis and Hernandez – prove that employers need exhaustive and comprehensive background checks before hiring a new employee.
