Enhancing Our Security = Ensuring Our Freedoms!
In the city where the first shots for our country’s independence were fired, giving birth to the greatest experiment in human rights, freedom and democracy, it was ironic that on September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked American Airlines Flight #11 and United Airlines Flight # 175 from Boston to Los Angeles, and crashed both planes into the North and South towers. This resulted in searching to strike a delicate balance between safe-guarding our security and our rights and freedoms.
After over a decade of relative peace, Boston’s sense of public safety was again shaken to the core when two terrorists successfully detonated two IEDs near the finish line of the 117th Boston Marathon. More chilling was the fact that the terrorists had planned to raise the bar. They were planning their next strike during the July 4th celebration in Mahattan! In addition to again ensuring general safety, the level of security that is deemed necessary for private and public venues was re-examined. A paradigm shift in private security has emerged in which an executive security agent’s experience, education, training and skill sets are now more diverse and complex than ever.
No longer is a luke-warm, half-sober, half-awake body in an ill-fitting uniform or cheap suit suitable for special event security or executive protection. As it is impossible to post law enforcement on every street corner, a credible team of private executive security agents can help bridge the gap. They must be disciplined and articulate to write routine After-Action Reports in the morning, adept at applying verbal judo to diplomatically handle an access control issue with an executive or VIP at lunch, and identify and decisively address a credible safety-security threat in the evening.
Business enterprises and special event functions simply cannot afford to roll the dice hoping that status quo will provide adequate risk management. In short, a credible security program that meets today’s security needs has become part of the cost of doing business in Boston. Therefore, the culture of security being a low-end fixed cost simply to “maintain a presence,” check-off an insurance box, or provide a false sense of security needs to be replaced. An effective safety-security program, staffed by well-led and trained executive security agents and embraced by an entity’s executive level to ensure an enhanced security culture, is critical. Falling short of this endeavor would arguably be morally, ethically and, potentially, fiscally irresponsible.
Though even the most robust, layered security program cannot guarantee 100% safety, in today’s imperfect, uncertain world it will greatly improve a function’s risk management in which its people can still enjoy the freedoms and liberties that started in Boston 238 years ago.
