Aaron Hernandez Investigation Continues as Focus Shifts to His Fiancee
As former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernadez faces a first-degree murder charge (as well as five gun-related charges) in the killing of his associate, Odin Lloyd, investigators continue to search for the missing gun used in the execution-style murder. Hernandez’ own surveillance cameras show him holding the murder weapon after the crime was committed, but the police have been unable to find the .45 caliber gun. In the weeks following his arrest, the Connecticut State Police Department’s diving team searched a lake in Bristol, Connecticut (nearby Hernandez’ childhood home) after receiving a tip that the weapon may have been hidden in a Connecticut lake.
After failed attempts at locating the gun in the lake over the past few weeks, investigators now believe Hernandez may have asked his fiancee, Shayanna Jenkins, to hide the weapon in a gun safe days after the murder. Surveillance cameras captured video of Jenkins holding a small box, possibly a safe for the gun, and putting it in her sister’s car, and then reportedly storing it at a bank.
More recently, investigators have located a separate weapon, which ballistics tests confirmed was used in a 2012 double homicide, of which Hernandez is also connected. This occurred in front of a Boston nightclub when a Rhode Island SUV killed two men in a drive-by-shooting. Police believe Hernandez had rented the same SUV around the time of the murders in July of 2012, and the two victims reportedly fought with Hernandez and his friends prior to the shootings. Additionally, it is speculated that Lloyd was aware of Hernandez’ role in the previous double homicide, which may have been Hernandez’ motive in the murder of Lloyd.
