Mr. Groob's Report on Conference
Dear Fellow CII Members and Friends:
Having just returned from this extraordinary experience, once again, it was a great pleasure to meet with all of you in beautiful Kinsale, Ireland. The location, hospitality and food far exceeded all expectations, and although not a major city, Kinsale provided the CII membership with the closeness of family which is so characteristic of our organization.
This year's AGM was a huge success, and I think we all owe a debt of gratitude to our conference host, Derek Nally and the PODs, as well as our President-elect, Alan Marr. Thanks to their efforts, an impressive list of dignitaries graced our presence, adding a special cachet to the conference.
Additionally, the shopping trips and spouses' tours were tremendous fun, especially the imbibing atmosphere, in which we learned the true meaning of throwing back a few pints!
Congratulations to Brian King on garnering the Investigator of the Year Award for his outstanding achievements in the field. He once again went above and beyond the call of duty by accepting his award in person, despite his alleged "food poisoning."
Congratulations also to Claude Myles on becoming the Council's 3rd Vice President. The Cayman Islands will surely be a kick in 2006!
Special thanks also to Jimmy Gahan for his exceptional PR work on behalf of the Council, which generated extensive coverage in the written media, as well as television and radio.
We are all grateful to our out-going Secretary, Bill Elliott, who has done a commendable job for the Council. And, on behalf of the Council, I wish to welcome his replacement, Nancy Barber, who willingly accepted this daunting task.
I wish to take this opportunity to acknowledge each and every member of the Board of Directors for their dedication to our organization. And, speaking of dedication, I believe that no one deserves the Meritorious Service Award more than this year's recipient, Jim Kirby.
I especially enjoyed that portion of Chairman Ponno Kalastree's speech which referred to "kissing the castle" at Blarney, giving that expression a new (and more socially acceptable) definition for many of us.
And, last but not least, I wish Joan Beach all the best in coordinating her 2004 AGM in Alexandria, Virginia. This will undoubtedly be the culmination of our 50 years of conferences, and is sure to be a fantastic experience.
Thanks again to all the Board Members for making Kinsale an unforgettable experience.
Our grateful appreciation is extended to Herman Kaminski, who overcame countless obstacles to secure Malta for our Mid-Year Meeting location at the 11th hour. I look forward to seeing each and every one of you there.
Sincerely,
Jay L. Groob
